In the realm of global sports initiatives, few partnerships resonate as profoundly as that between DP World and legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who stands not only as a cricketing icon but also as a beacon for societal change. As a DP World Global Ambassador, Tendulkar’s influence extends beyond the boundaries of cricket, encapsulating the essence of DP World’s commitment to transformative sports engagement.
In this exclusive interview, we delve into the dynamic collaboration between DP World and Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, exploring the multifaceted impact of their shared vision on sports accessibility, community empowerment, and the cultivation of future talent on a global scale.
As the DP World Global Ambassador to make cricket accessible globally what are major positive changes you have been a part of with the DP World brand?
Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar: I am extremely happy with the partnership with DP World which has succeeded in going beyond boundaries to help make cricket possible globally.
Under this global initiative, DP World has leveraged its end-to-end network and smart logistics capabilities to deliver repurposed shipping containers equipped with cricket gear and essentials, to grassroots cricket clubs around the world. Over the next 5 years, fifty such containers are to be delivered.
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup was used as a launchpad for this unique partnership and the first container was launched in my hometown, Mumbai. The repurposed containers serve as a pavilion and are equipped with an in-built scoreboard, sun protection and seating. More importantly, they ensure a safe space for girls, as the containers can be used as changing rooms.
Throughout the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, DP World also pledged to donate 10 kits for every 100 runs scored by a team in a match and over 2,500 kits were pledged. To date, over 800 kits have been delivered through four repurposed shipping containers, most recently in Dubai.
It is a pleasure to be a part of this initiative and I look forward to witnessing its impact in nurturing the next generation of cricketers.
As a young cricketer who has risen through the ranks, what do you feel the young cricketer of today needs the most?
A few decades ago, the opportunities for cricketers were limited. Today, cricket is flourishing across the globe and there are multiple avenues to play the game including through the various cricket clubs and leagues. Hence, it is important for youngsters to stay motivated and sustain their efforts to make the most of the opportunities that come their way. One can get it ‘right’, or one can get it ‘now’, ‘right now’ hardly works. Today’s cricketers also need to put in conscious efforts towards mental fitness, along with physical fitness. Having a good support system of family and friends always helps.
Like most young cricketers, I grew up playing for my local club. I understand the importance of quality cricketing equipment and kits, and how this can positively impact young cricketers. By providing facilities and equipment, it’s heartening to see DP World’s commitment to nurturing young cricketing talent not just in India, but across the world.
What has been the impact of T20 on cricket?
Cricket is one of the few sports, where tradition and modernity continue to co-exist. Test, Limited Overs (50) and T20 – each format has influenced and inspired the other. Apart from developing batters’ ability to play all around the wicket, and bowlers working out innovative ways to get batters out, the most transformational impact of T20 has been the acrobatic standards of fielding that we are getting to witness today.
DP World has recognised the value each format brings to fans worldwide. It has been great to see DP World being involved with the ICC World Test Championship, ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India, and with T20 leagues across the world. As part of the Beyond Boundaries initiative in DP World ILT20, the brand has pledged a kit for every six being hit in the tournament.
The sport you like playing apart from cricket?
I love playing all types of sports, and I encourage people to pick up any sport that they find enjoyable and fulfilling. My vision has been to transform India from a sport-loving nation to a sport-playing nation. Last time I was in Dubai, I witnessed the Fitness Village of which DP World is also a part. To see sports being used as a medium for bringing society together and keeping citizens fit was very encouraging.
I love playing racquet sports, including new-age ones like Padel and Pickleball. I am curious to see how these new sports catch the imagination of fans worldwide.
How have you been spending your time after retirement, in your 2nd innings?
I used to bat on the field earlier. Now, I have the responsibility of batting off the field. Giving back to society has been a key focus for me and my family. Through the Sachin Tendulkar Foundation, we aim to positively impact the lives of children through interventions in the areas of sports, health, and education.
Apart from this, there are purpose-driven partnerships that my team at SRT Sports Management (SRTSM) strives to achieve. The relationship with DP World is one such example of a “partnership with purpose”.
On the personal front, I have been able to spend more time with family and go on vacations together, something that I have been doing regularly in the last few years. Exploring new places with them has been exciting.
