Sheikha Haya Al Khalifa is a specialized visual artist with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Illustrations from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Zamalek, Cairo, which she earned in 1980. Her work reflects her deep connection to Bahrain’s heritage, using color, form, and intricate details to tell stories from the past.
Samira Al Shenoo, also a specialized visual artist, graduated from the Drawing Department at the Faculty of Arts, Zamalek, Cairo, in 1989. Her artwork explores the intersection of tradition and emotion, creating visual narratives that transport the viewer to a time filled with warmth, light, and joy.

Together, the two artists explore the theme of “The Joy,” reflecting the lively celebrations and everyday moments that once filled Bahrain’s communities. The early 20th century was a time when music, dance, and color played a major role in public life. Artists like Sheikha Haya and Samira Al Shenoo were inspired by the vibrant scenes of children playing, traditional songs echoing through homes, and the warm glow of sunlight filtering through palm-roofed houses. Their works bring to life these cherished memories, creating pieces that pulse with energy and nostalgia.
Each painting offers a unique rhythm, filled with decorative patterns and textures that reflect the joy and playfulness of the time. The artists draw from a combination of personal memories, old photographs, archival books, and research to recreate these moments. Their art transports the viewer to a simpler time, where every detail – from the children’s laughter to the bright flowers, birds, and homes – tells a story of happiness and connection.
The exhibition features vibrant scenes filled with figures, houses, trees, and joyful characters. The color tones are harmonious and inviting, creating an emotional connection to the past while celebrating the beauty of life’s simplest moments. Through their artwork, Sheikha Haya and Samira invite us to experience joy not just as an emotion but as a living, breathing part of Bahrain’s cultural history.
The Joy is a testament to the power of art to preserve memories, celebrate culture, and evoke emotion. Through the eyes of these two talented artists, visitors will be reminded of the timeless beauty of Bahrain’s social traditions and the universal appeal of happiness and harmony.
