The desert kingdom of Bahrain set the stage for a momentous occasion as the 2024 Formula One season roared into life. Not only did it mark the official commencement of the year’s racing calendar, but it also celebrated a cherished milestone – the 20th anniversary of the Bahrain Grand Prix. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation, fuelled not just by the promise of high-octane racing on the track, but also by the presence of a glittering array of luminaries who graced the paddock.

Leading the charge was His Royal Highness Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Kingdom of Bahrain, the visionary leader whose foresight and initiative brought Formula One to the shores of Bahrain two decades ago. The race was also attended by the Representative of His Majesty the King for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs, His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and the First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, Chairman of the General Sports Authority and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Footballing icons like the world-renowned Neymar Jr. and Patrice Evra found themselves rubbing shoulders with prominent figures from the world of entertainment. This included the ever-engaging English television personality Jeremy Clarkson, best known for his acerbic wit on the captivating TV show Top Gear, who waved the chequered flag. Royalty, too, lent its presence to the occasion, with Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, attending alongside her daughter Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank. The presence of Geri Honer née Halliwell, a member of the iconic Spice Girls, was much talked especially in the light of her husband, Christian Horner, Team Principal of Red Bull, being mired in controversy.

As the checkered flag fell, signalling the end of the race, the celebrations shifted to a different gear. The electrifying performance of DJ Diplo pulsated through the night, creating an unforgettable post-race experience for all.
The race itself lived up to the pre-race excitement, delivering a thrilling performance. Red Bull, continuing their dominant run, secured a commanding one-two finish, showcasing their unwavering strength. However, the day held a delightful surprise in the form of Carlos Sainz snatching the third podium spot, surpassing his teammate who had secured a better qualifying position. While Mercedes encountered challenges during the race, highlighting the work ahead for them, Bahrain’s beloved team, McLaren, showcased significant progress with their cars, demonstrating impressive speed on the track with Lando Norris coming in 6th while Oscar Piastri finished 8th.

With a dazzling array of celebrities, royalty, and music icons adding their presence to the occasion, and the thrilling racing action keeping fans on the edge of their seats, the 20th Anniversary Bahrain Grand Prix marked a truly spectacular launch for the Formula One season. It was a celebration not just of speed and competition, but also of the enduring allure of the sport and the legacy it has built in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The year ahead promises to be filled with captivating competition, thrilling races, and moments that will be etched in the annals of Formula One history.
