This one will be one to look out for – the American singer, songwriter, and producer Pharrell Williams has taken on the role of Louis Vuitton’s Men’s Creative Director.
Pharrell Williams replaces the late designer Virgil Abloh, who died after a two-year battle with cardiac angiosarcoma. “I am glad to welcome Pharrell back home, after our collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, as our new Men’s Creative Director. His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter”, said Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton’s Chairman and CEO.
In 2004, the “Happy” singer and the multi-billion dollar fashion house joined forces to create the Millionaire Sunglasses. The shades originally came in striking red and were later reissued in 2007 in purple, teal, and classic black. The Millionaires were sported by Pharrell when he attended Jacobs’s Louis Vuitton fashion shows and were also seen on Kanye West and Virgil Abloh.
In 2008, together, they launched a fine jewellery collection. teaming up with a then-jewellery consultant, Camille Miceli, they created Blason. The Blason ring became a must-have among collectors and was spotted on numerous celebrities as well. The fact that Pharrell was chosen for this role should not come as a surprise considering his style, his stature in the street fashion culture and his own creations – Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream footwear. Not to forget his multi-year contract with Adidas.
Whether he will be able to meet the fashion house’s reputation and standard is something we will all find out in June when he debuts at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris. The singer has also collaborated with Chanel, Moncler, and Moynat, among others.
