It is said that the Egyptians used lavender for mummification and as a perfume. In fact, when King Tut’s tomb was opened in 1923, it was said that there was a faint scent of lavender that could still be detected even after 3,000 years! While this might just be bunkum – the many benefits of using lavender oil are very real. From being an antioxidant to helping with stress relief, here are five ways in which using the essential oil this winter might be just what you need.
- As a moisturiser
- Mixing two drops of lavender oil, with tea tree oil and 2 teaspoons of coconut oil will bring comfort to your skin during the harsh winter months.
- Evens skin tone
- Lavender oil helps with hyperpigmentation, aids in reducing discolouration and helps even skin tone. Gently massaging onto the skin, lavender will gently treat acne and scars.
- Helps with rejuvenation and prevents premature aging
- Lavender oil is full of antioxidants, which help protect you from free radicals. To use lavender oil for wrinkles, use a few drops of essential oil along with coconut oil. The mixture can be used as a moisturizer once or twice a day.
- Stimulating Hair Growth
- Studies say massaging lavender oil into the scalp can stimulate hair growth by nourishing hair follicles. You may try a combination of coconut oil and a few drops of lavender oil for the best results.
- Improves Mood and Reduces Stress
- To relieve stress and improve sleep, put it in a diffuser by your bed, while you sleep at night or in the family room while you’re reading or winding down in the evening. You can also use it topically behind your ears for similar results.

How to use lavender oil for skin
How you use lavender oil depends on what you’re treating. You can put it on your skin with a carrier oil to form a lotion. If you’re putting it on a damaged part of your skin, it’s often best to use a cotton ball, which is cleaner than your fingers.
For wrinkles and dry skin, you can apply the oil directly with your hands. Lavender oil can also be ingested in pill form, or used as steam for aromatherapy.
